Transformation Thursday: My Mum’s 60th Birthday…

On Monday my mum celebrated her 60th birthday - a pretty cool milestone in life!

One thing she said whilst we were enjoying a slice of cake (my dad made yet another insane vegan one!) was how she can’t believe how she’s in better shape now than on her 50th, 40th (or 30th).

My mum joined RNT in 2020 after years of convincing her. She’d tried every fad diet, magazine gimmick and quick fix out there. But nothing stuck.

In 2020 she got into the shape of her life, but in the years after, she battled the old habits which kept creeping up.

Like snacking when stressed, indulging too much on holidays, and no “rules” during socials.

In the past 12 months one of her goals has been to break these and find a “sweet spot” she can maintain with ease.

Fresh off a month-long trip to India and a big family wedding, she was put to the test. But what would normally be a few extra kilos gained equated to zero change this time.

A big win. This picture says it all:
She reflected with me on Monday saying how she finally feels her identity around health and fitness has shifted - this was so nice to hear because it validates a few things:
    • Rewiring identity takes YEARS not weeks or months.
    • Old habits ingrained from DECADES can be broken.
    • You can get in shape AND stay in shape no matter your age.
Age really is just a number. If you think getting fit is only for people in their 20s with no responsibilities, think again.

In fact, next Wednesday I’m hosting a specific masterclass specific to women’s weight loss:

For now, let’s dive into this week’s Transformation Thursday…

3 Ways To Look, Feel & Perform Your Best

This week I’m going to focus on my three favourite methods of approaching social events for weight management:

    1. Stick by the “one plate” rule.

That means no appetisers, desserts or drinks. On the plate, you want:

    a) ½ plate of veggies. Ask for the sauces/dressings on the side.

    b) A good source of protein (ideally ¼-⅓ of the plate). The leaner the better (chicken, fish, soy mince, Quorn or tofu).

    c) If you’re in a fat loss phase, everything else “on the side” would be the safest bet here.

    2. Try the “simple swap”.

Instead of number crunching or using excessive “buffering” to save calories for a big meal, pick something similar on the menu.

If you’re somewhat close, you’ll be better off than not going in with this awareness.

    3. The “protein preload”.

Mix up 30-50g protein powder, 3g xanthan gum and 400-600ml liquid together in a blender.

The combo of protein + fibre will keep you full & reduce the chance of a bad decision.

You also won’t need to worry about hitting your protein target at the event!

This week on RNT Fitness Radio I’m joined by Coach Lewis Culshaw from the RNT Team to talk about his recent journey of getting into the best shape of his life for a photoshoot this summer.

Lewis dives into how he navigated his schedule to juggle being an active dad, a supportive partner to his pregnant fiance, and of course, working with our members to help them achieve the best shape of their lives.

We also touch on how Lewis got into coaching, what he’s learnt from this shoot, and how he’s mastered consolidation.
